In memoriam
Rouben Malian
Golden Hint is an initiative of the foundation that carries his name.
Rouben Malian was admired for his judgment and for a moral compass that held true whatever the circumstances. Those who knew him describe three qualities above all: he kept his word, he did not give up, and he was willing to bet on people and ideas when the odds were long but the cause was right.
He passed away in Sydney, Australia, in 2018. His family, friends and colleagues resolved that his legacy would not stand still, and created the Rouben Malian Memorial Foundation in New York, in his name. For a man who was always in motion, a plaque would not do. His memorial had to be work that keeps moving.
The Foundation is a New York nonprofit corporation, recognized as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. It builds a small number of initiatives and funds them in full, so that each can put its mission ahead of revenue.
The values Golden Hint carries forward
- IntegrityRouben believed a person's word was their bond. On Golden Hint, that means honest reviews, promises kept between charities, and rules that say exactly what they mean.
- TenacityHe treated obstacles as puzzles rather than stop signs. Golden Hint exists for the people who keep going when the paperwork is hard and the help is scarce.
- Big betsHe backed people before the world did. Golden Hint bets that the sector's own knowledge, freely shared, is worth more than anything we could buy for it.
Why the Foundation created Golden Hint
The Foundation's work has always been about closing the distance between potential and opportunity: one family, one student, one scholar at a time. Golden Hint takes the same idea to the organizations that do that work every day. A small charity with a brilliant cause and no accountant is potential without opportunity. Golden Hint is how the sector closes that gap for itself.
Golden Hint has its own name and look, but it shares the Foundation's standards: fund fully, measure honestly, stay close to the people served, and never sell anyone's data.
